Nothing is more rewarding than a do-it-yourself project in your own home. This is especially true when it comes to your floor. That’s why we’ve decided to give you a step-by-step guide on how to install a ceramic floor tile. A DIY ceramic tile floor can be a good choice for your kitchen. It’s something that you can brag about to your friends, especially when it’s a do-it-yourself installation.
Step 1: Prepare and Pour the Cement Mixture
Make sure there are no holes or dents in the floor. Also, ensure that the floor is level and flat. If you find several holes, you must prepare the floor by patching the holes with quick-drying cement. Then, let it sit for at least 24 hours to dry.
Step 2: Clean the Floor Surface
After preparing and leveling the floor, remove the debris by thoroughly cleaning its surface… twice if possible. It’s easier for the cement to fasten the tile from the ground if it’s clean. Remove everything from the floor area, including any fixtures. Stack at least two tiles on the top of each other in the door opening to see if you have enough clearance.
Step 3: Dry-Fit the Tiles
Place the tiles on the floor deciding exactly how you want the tiles to be placed. Be careful. Keep in mind that once the tiles are laid, they can’t be removed. Measure the radius of the room to mark the center spot where you will start. Mark it by making a horizontal and vertical line across the room with chalk. Start working from the center so that you can use mostly whole tiles and only have to cut the tiles that will be placed at the sides along the wall.
Step 4: Apply the Mortar
Mix the mortar with the water until it becomes a butter-like texture. Prepare it in small batches as you go along because the mixture hardens instantaneously. Spread it evenly across the floor using the flat side of a trowel. After you’re done with the whole area, turn the trowel to its other side and use the grooved side to spread it at 45-degree angle.
Step 5: Spread the Tile Adhesive
Spread the adhesive on the back side of the tile in a fairly thin layer. After spreading the adhesive, gently lay down the tiles. Make sure not to slide it… just lay it down. Repeat this step until the whole area has been covered by the tiles. When you get to a place where you have to cut the tile to fit the corner, just use a tile cutter and make sure that you have measured it properly.
Step 6: Apply the Grout
Once you’re done placing all the tiles on the floor, let it dry for about an hour. Then, you can apply a grout. Grout will fill in the spaces left in between the tiles. Apply the grout to those spaces and use a grout float to evenly spread it. Then, use a wet sponge to wash out any residue. Do this to all the tiles and then wait 24 hours for everything to dry, before you can step on your new floor.
