DIY – A Beginners Guide to Interior Painting

Painting can be time-consuming, but it can also be fun. Interior painting can be used as a family project to paint the new nursery, game room or kids’ playroom. Make a Workstation

• Set up a workstation in the center of your work area.
• Gather all of your supplies and tools and place them on your workstation.

Prep 1 Day Ahead of Time

• The day before your painting starts, is the day for moving things from on and near the walls, including switch plates, furniture, light fixtures, etc… Be sure to remove door knobs, hinges and outlet plates.
• Painter’s Blue Tape conceals surfaces that you do not want to get paint on. It’s good for borders, areas that you plan to paint another color. Paint can’t seep through and paint won’t peel when removed.

Prep Yourself

• Put on clothes and shoes that are comfortable that you don’t mind getting paint on.
• Remove all jewelery and cover your hair with a shower cap, scarf, or anything that completely covers your hair.

Fix Walls Before Painting

Be sure to fix any cracks and holes in the walls before you begin painting. Fiberglass tape, spackle and texturizing products can help with this.

• Remove loose paint with a scraper. Clean holes with vacuum attachment. Wash down walls.
• Fill cracks with patching compound and smooth with putty knife. If needed, sand with sandpaper.
• Clean well and let dry.

Time to Prime

• Priming seals the surface, helping your top coat look richer.
• Spot priming can be done over areas where sanding has been done.

• Drying time can vary for interior painting due to humidity and other weather conditions.
